Back in the 1950s, a bold and creative bartender named Harry Yee was working at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki, Hawaii. At that time, the Dutch distillery Bols was looking to promote its new blue curaçao liqueur in the United States. They approached Yee with a challenge: create a cocktail that would showcase their vibrant blue liqueur and capture the essence of the beautiful Hawaiian islands.
Drawing inspiration from the stunning blue hues of the Pacific Ocean and the tropical landscape of Hawaii, Yee crafted the now-iconic Blue Hawaii cocktail. He combined blue curaçao with vodka, sweet and sour mix, and a touch of pineapple juice, creating a visually striking and refreshing drink that instantly became a hit.
Now, for our Ken-inspired version of the cocktail, I decided to get creative, making it non-alcoholic and have it loosely be inspired by the essence of the original. Instead of blue curaçao, I used butterfly pea powder to achieve a tropical color. The addition of orange bitters and Wilderton Lustre brought the citrusy flavors that the iconic blue liqueur is known for. And of course, I couldn't resist adding coconut creamer to maintain that tropical touch, just like the Hawaiian islands where the original Blue Hawaii was born! 🏝️🦋🍹
